Hezekiah Baughman was born in Noble County, Indiana. In 1854 his parents moved the family to Shelby County, Iowa. In 1862 he left farming to enlist as a member of Company I of the 23rd Regiment of the Iowa Volunteer Infantry at Lewis, Iowa. This regiment participated in many of the most difficult engagements of the war. Hezekiah mustered out at Harrisburg, Texas in 1865.
